electrical wires coming out of junction box during home rewiring in Detroit MI

August may still feel like summer in Metro Detroit, but fall and winter aren’t far away.

As temperatures drop and daylight hours get shorter, many homes begin using more electricity. Furnaces and boilers cycle more frequently, lights stay on longer, portable heaters may come out of storage and holiday decorations eventually add another electrical load.

That makes late summer and early fall a smart time to pay attention to an often-overlooked part of your home: the electrical panel.

Here are seven warning signs that your electrical system may need professional attention before another Michigan winter arrives.

1. Your Breakers Trip Frequently

A circuit breaker is designed to trip when it detects an unsafe electrical condition. An occasional trip caused by plugging too many devices into one circuit can happen.

Repeated breaker trips are different.

If the same breaker regularly shuts off, there may be an overloaded circuit, faulty device, wiring problem or another electrical issue that should be diagnosed.

Don’t repeatedly reset a breaker without determining why it keeps tripping.

2. Your Lights Flicker or Dim

Do the lights dim when a major appliance starts?

Does lighting flicker throughout the house for no obvious reason?

Occasional minor fluctuations can occur, but persistent flickering or dimming can indicate loose wiring, overloaded circuits, electrical service issues or other problems.

An electrician can troubleshoot the system and determine whether the problem originates with an individual circuit, the electrical panel or elsewhere.

3. Your Electrical Panel Is Older

Many homes throughout Detroit and Metro Detroit were built long before today’s electrical demands existed.

Think about what has changed.

Modern homes may have multiple televisions, computers, large kitchen appliances, central air conditioning, high-powered entertainment equipment, home offices, smart-home devices and electric vehicle chargers.

An electrical system designed decades ago may not have been intended to support today’s electrical load.

Age alone doesn’t automatically mean a panel must be replaced, but an older system is worth having professionally evaluated.

4. You Hear Buzzing or Crackling

Your electrical panel shouldn’t be making noticeable buzzing, crackling or sizzling sounds.

These noises can indicate loose connections, damaged components or electrical arcing.

If you hear unusual sounds coming from your panel, outlets or switches, don’t remove the panel cover or attempt to diagnose the problem yourself. Contact a licensed electrician.

5. You Notice Heat or Burning Smells

A persistent burning or hot-plastic smell near an outlet, switch or electrical panel deserves immediate attention.

Electrical components can become hot when connections are loose or circuits are overloaded.

Discoloration around outlets or switches is another warning sign.

Turn off affected equipment when it is safe to do so and have the problem inspected by an electrician.

6. You’re Running Out of Electrical Capacity

Homeowners are asking their electrical systems to do more than ever.

Adding an EV charger, remodeled kitchen, finished basement, workshop, hot tub or other major electrical load may require additional capacity.

If your panel is already full or your electrical service isn’t large enough for planned improvements, an electrical service or panel upgrade may be necessary.

It’s better to determine that before beginning a major home improvement project.

7. Your Home Still Has Older Wiring

Detroit and its surrounding communities contain many beautiful older homes. Those homes can also contain electrical systems installed many decades ago.

Knob-and-tube wiring and other older electrical systems should be evaluated based on their condition, modifications and the electrical demands placed upon them.

Older wiring isn’t something homeowners should attempt to inspect or modify themselves. A qualified electrician can evaluate the system and recommend appropriate repairs or upgrades.

Why Check Your Electrical System Before Winter?

Michigan winters put homes to work.

Heating equipment operates more often. Families spend more time indoors. Lighting usage increases as the days get shorter. Holiday lights and decorations add additional demand later in the season.

Identifying electrical problems during late summer or fall gives you an opportunity to address them before winter weather arrives.

It can also be a convenient time to discuss other improvements you’ve been considering, including additional circuits, lighting upgrades, EV charger installation or backup generator options.
